The creators of House and The Librarian have been given the green light for a 10 episode series featuring escapologist Harry Houdini and Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

It’s no secret that Conan Doyle and Houdini were close friends for a time. Conan Doyle was fascinated with the paranormal and generally believed anything including the 1917 Cottingley Fairy hoax, which he accepted before even seeing the photographs. In contrast, Houdini was extremely skeptical about these things and dismissed them. Despite their apparent polar opposites, they were firm friends. That is until Houdini was invited to a seance by Conan Doyle where they tried to contact Houdini’s mother. The medium – Conan Doyle’s wife – made signs of the cross and claimed to be the escapologist’s Mother speaking through the Medium. Houdini left the seance in no doubt that it was set up and publicly claimed so once Conan Doyle had returned to England. For this program to work, it would have to happen before that time or overlook that event entirely. However, if they’re to keep to the historical time-frame, they only have six years; Houdini and Conan Doyle met in 1920 when Houdini was touring England. He died in 1926. It could work in other ways though. Most of these types of programs have someone who believes entirely (Mulder/Conan Doyle) and one who is skeptical about it all (Scully/Houdini). Depending on the way they want to angle the program, they’ll have to debunk every one or prove them correct each episode. Who would be the best actors to be cast as the duo?
