Penny Dreadful items are to go up for auction

A three day auction is to take place from September 13th 2016 to September 15th 2016 featuring various items that were used in the gothic horror Penny Dreadful. The lots will go up for sale at The Pavilion, Puncestown Racecourse, Co. Kildare, Ireland and is hosted by Ashgrove Auctions.

The show, which starred a multitude of well known actors such as Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Billie Piper and Rory Kinnear, had dozens of items made specifically for the sets but among them up for sale are some genuine Victorian antiques, purchased from speciality dealers.

Genuine items going up for auction include Lot 3056, described as “an exquisite matched pair of Irish oak wine coolers in the sarcophagus shape”, dating from the early 19th century and estimated at €4,000-€6,000; Lot 2940, a 19th-century “campaign” wash cabinet made for a ship’s cabin with a drop-down front to reveal tap and basin (€200-€400); and Lot 3238, a 19th-century oak gun cabinet, the interior fitted with drawers and gun supports, with a label from R&J Watkins, 40 Harrington Street, Dublin (€400-€600).

The show followed the adventures of Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) who fought the evils of the world such as Vampires, Witches and even Satan himself while also fighting her own inner demons. She was joined in her quests by Sir Malcolm Murray (the ever unwaivering Timothy Dalton), Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) and Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway). The antagonists were genuinely frightening in their ambition to take Miss Ives’ soul from her and it was amazing to watch a program about an exceptionally strong woman fight impossible odds and still maintain her humanity. All set at a time when women were seen as demure, fragile and petite.
