Gothic Victorian fantasy programme Penny Dreadful has won an award from Steampunk Journal today, it was revealed. The award is for the most amount of articles written about the fact that their will never be a fourth series of the US/UK show, but still with a headline that leads the reader to believe that there may be one on the horizon.
The delightful news came just under three months after the show aired it’s final episode. Penny Dreaful starred Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Billie Piper and Rory Kinnear as part of the star studded regular cast. Throughout each series, the protagonists would have to battle various nefarious creatures of the underworld, such as vampires and witches.
No intention of returning
Series creator and writer John Logan has said multiple times that Penny Dreadful would run for three series. However in a bizarre twist of fate, the networks weren’t ready to pull the programme from the schedule after the first, second or even the third series. Not like they usually do with programmes I enjoy watching. Instead they were happy for it to continue. Couple that with the viewers really enjoying it and by the completion of the story, we were left desperately wanting more.
To that end, many click-bait websites immediately jumped into action and ran stories about the fact that their WON’T be a fourth series. They used headlines such as:
Penny Dreadful Season 4: Series To Happen Under New Writer?
‘Penny Dreadful’ season 4 renewal on Netflix? New season to shed light on other characters’ adventures
The above are just two recent articles about the end of Penny Dreadful. The first one gives a glimmer of hope to the reader that a fourth installment may be in the making. It cuts us down towards the end of the article after we’ve read through enough padding out to push their staistics up.
The second link suggests that their may be spin off series made. Either that or that a fourth may be picked up by a viewing platform such as Netflix. However, these options have never been anything more than speculation.
Sadly, the click-bait websites are preying on our hopes that it will see a last minute revival and are milking it for all it’s worth.
I’ve not seen a reaction like this on a programme before. I expect the next we’ll see it is when Game of Thrones ends.
Congratulations Penny Dreadful!
