Steampunks in New Zealand are bound to be very excited. Now that kiwi based mega-Director Sir Peter Jackson has announced that he’s looking for extras to appear in Mortal Engines.
The advert for extras went up in Trade Me recently. While it was light on details, it did ask that applicants were to be fully flexible and available to work with 12 hours notice. It also requires extras to be available while filming proceeds from March, through to June 2017. Anyone working on the project as an extra will be paid $200 a day before overtime and that could be working anything between one and 12 days. It also specified that applicants must live in Wellington, be a resident of New Zealand or hold a current work permit. With that, thousands of hearts from around the world sank. Not so much for the residents there, though.
There are four books in the series from Phillip Reeves. Mortal Engines is the first, followed by Predator’s Gold, Infernal Devices, and A Darkling Plain. Variety magazine confirmed that Mortal Engines will be the first in a series of films covering the steampunk novels so this could really see steampunk thrust into the limelight again. Will it be done properly though? Will they ask steampunks to advise on the small details that can sometimes be overlooked? The advert has expired now, so I couldn’t check it, but it’s unlikely to have asked specifically for steampunks.
About Mortal Engines
Mortal Engines takes it’s name from a scene in Othello by William Shakespeare. Othello says: “”Othello: And O you mortal engines whose rude throats / Th’immortal Jove’s dread clamors counterfeit…”
It’s set in the far future in a dystopian Earth where war has ravaged the land. London is modified as a city to run on wheels and consume other cities by dismantling them and taking their resources. The technology catches on and spreads to other countries and continents.
A possible release date has been suggested as December 2018.
