The Loch Ness – More Than a Monster In Scotland, the Loch Ness is the 2nd largest fresh water lake in the country. Loch is Scottish/Gaelic for the modern English “lake”. The Loch is approximately 37 kilometers/23 miles long and the surface is 16 metres/52 feet above sea level. The surface area covers 56 square kilometres/22 square miles.
